Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is an effective way to achieve clear skin, free of imperfections that are difficult to cover with makeup each day. Color changes in your skin can be caused by many factors, including age, hormones, and overexposure to the sun. Especially in such a warm climate as San Diego, many of our patients have brown spots, wrinkles, and discoloration that contribute to an aged appearance. If you’re searching for a way to improve the look and feel of your face, laser skin resurfacing treatment from The La Jolla Institute of Plastic Surgery can provide the results you’re looking for.
How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works
At The La Jolla Institute of Plastic Surgery, we begin by taking a complete medical history and conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Once your treatment is scheduled, you will be asked to stop taking any medications or supplements such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or vitamin E, as they can affect your clotting factors for ten days before surgery. If you smoke, you are encouraged to stop for two weeks before and after the treatment to prevent any interference with the healing process.
Laser resurfacing is an outpatient procedure and can take anywhere from 30 minutes up to two hours, depending on how much surface area is being treated. For small wrinkles around your eyes, mouth, or forehead, we will numb the areas with a local anesthetic. If your whole face is being treated, you may require general anesthesia.
Laser skin resurfacing can improve:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Aged or sun-damaged skin
- Liver spots
- Complexion color
A laser applies concentrated and precise beams of light to the irregular or damaged skin, removing the outer layer, called the epidermis. The laser also heats the underlying skin cells which stimulates the growth of new collagen fibers. As the treated areas heal, new skin will form that is smoother and firmer.
